![]() Many people were taken aback by the language and subject matter of Baraka’s work and he was criticized harshly. It was here that Baraka finally began to establish himself as a writer. The Beat Period (1957-1962) was climaxing. Baraka was having difficulty finding his place in the world until he finally moved to Greenwich Village in New York. After Howard he joined the air force, served for three years and was dishonorably discharged. ![]() but the learning environment was not for him he felt claustrophobic and suppressed. ![]() He attended Howard University in Washington D.C.
